What to Expect
What to expect, general information about your consultation, treatment and after your visit.
After you have booked your appointment, you will be sent information about your visit via email. Please read this thoroughly before you attend the clinic. Please make sure you have completed the necessary paperwork online and resubmitted this back to us electronically before your appointment.
We will have read the completed forms you return to us before you have your appointment.
When you arrive in the car park, please wait so that you can see your practitioner as they come to the door to bring you in. If your practitioner is running late by more than 15 minutes, or you turn up late, please come to the entrance door of the clinic and press the bell that has your practitioner’s name on it. This will ring in their clinic room. When your practitioner is ready to bring you into the clinic, they will come to the door in the car park and beckon you in.
During the Sars Covid 2 Pandemic we have put special measures to help us to see patients in person whilst reducing risk of infection and staying safe. We will be adhering to these measures and will bring you into the clinic from the car park when it is safe to do so. You will find detail of these measures on this website, COVID-19.
Once you are in the consulting room the practitioner will start to diagnose your problem by asking you a lot of questions (i.e., takes (taking?) your case history). If at any stage you feel uncomfortable, physically, or emotionally please let the practitioner know and they will listen to your concerns and address them as best they can. They may suggest you move around or even lie down whilst they ask you some questions. Do not feel you have to stay in one position whilst you are talking to your practitioner. Please move around to make yourself comfortable during this process.
Your practitioner will then undertake a thorough physical examination, noting posture and movements as well as carrying out other tests such as reflexes and other neurological examinations etc. Your practitioner may carry out other tests such as listening to your heart and lungs and taking your blood pressure. They will explain clearly why we are doing these examinations and their findings with you, in an easy-to-understand way. They may advise that further tests are carried out to gain a better understanding your problem, such as MRI scans, Xray imaging and Ultrasounds as well as blood tests. Your practitioner will instruct you as to the best way to do this if they feel it is necessary.
If you feel unhappy at any stage during the consultation and treatment you must inform your practitioner and they will immediately stop what they are doing and try and resolve your problem as best they can.
Once the osteopath has discovered the cause of your problem and that it is appropriate for you to be treated by them, they will carry out this out with your consent. You may have another person whom you know and trust with you throughout your visit. Just let your practitioner know that you would like this option as you enter the building. Please note all children under the age of 16 must have one parent present during their appointment.
You may remain clothed throughout the consultation and treatment. However, it would help us if you would wear loose clothes on your visit, and not tight heavy jeans or clothes made of fabric that it is hard for the osteopath to feel through. Shorts, leggings, joggers, and loose tee-shirts are most appropriate for a visit. Sometimes, you may be asked to undress some of your clothing to reveal areas of your body to allow your practitioner to make a more specific examination of your problem. You will always keep your underwear on.
After your examination you will get an explanation of what the problems is and a plan of what options are available to you, to improve it. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions about anything that you do not understand about your care.
If it is appropriate, you may be offered a short course of treatment to help you resolve this problem as quickly as possible. Most usual treatment commences in your session with us. You will also be given advice in order to help you. This may involve exercises, changes to your posture and the seating and computer positions you use, lifestyle changes and maybe some nutritional advice. You will also be told when the most appropriate time is for you to return for a follow-up appointment.
Please be considerate when making or rearranging appointments as others may be waiting for an appointment who are in need.
If you need to rearrange or cancel an appointment with us, please call the clinic on 01780 239 667. DO NOT EMAIL TO DO THIS. ANY CANCELLATIONS MADE WITHIN 2 WORKING DAYS OF THE APPOINTMENT WILL INCUR FULL PAYMENT.
You will have been seen by a qualified and registered practitioner who has provided an appropriate course of action on your first visit. If you have been asked to return for a follow up appointment you will have had explained the importance of doing so to achieve a particular outcome and to resolve your problem as quickly as possible.
Your problems are different to the problems of every other patient. So, your care can be different to another. We pride ourselves in listening carefully to your concerns and tailor-making a treatment approach to meet your specific needs.
Patients are allotted approximately 45 minutes for their first appointment and approximately 30 minutes for any follow up appointments. Allotted times are not fixed, and your practitioner may spend more or less time during your appointment. Time spent on treatment is dependent on the complexity of the problem, what the practitioner feels is required for a particular problem or how much can be achieved on each visit. Time is also required for providing exercises and advice.
If you have been given an advice sheet, please remember to re-read it regularly before your next visit and carry out the recommendations given to you for your problem.
If you have been asked to undertake some exercises, please try to do these regularly and follow the plan set out for you.
If you have been asked you not to do a particular activity or exercise, there will be a reason for this which was explained to you, and you should wait until advised otherwise.
It is common to feel stiff and sore following treatment; this usually lasts around 48-72 hours. Most people describe their reaction as ‘aching and pain felt after exercising’. It is common also to feel tired after a treatment. If you have any concerns about your treatment, please let us know as soon as possible.
If you have been referred for a scan or a further investigation, please keep in touch to let us know the result.
If you need to discuss any aspect of your consultation/ treatment with a member of the team, please contact the clinic directly and as soon as possible on 01780 239 667. One of our team members will be happy to address your concerns.
